CARTOON LOGIC: Woodies with Walter Lantz

Marc Deckter April 9th, 2008

I’m pretty excited about picking up the the new Woody Woodpecker and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection: Volume 2- but I’m not nearly as excited as the old men in this early 1920′s Jerry on the Job cartoon.

Believe it or not, Lantz was working on woody cartoons even before everyone’s favorite red-headed woodpecker. Check out the cartoon boners in the Lantz-animated “Swinging His Vacation” from 1920.

Jerry wants to go on vacation but his boss won’t let him because business is slow. So Jerry puts up a poster of a pretty woman in an attempt to sell more train tickets…

…beard woody…

CLIP#1 (5.1MB)

Haha, I love how he doesn’t walk but slides around the corner.

Well Jerry’s poster seems to be working, business is picking up…

CLIP#2 (7.6MB)

Who needs facial expressions when you’ve got a beard and a hat?

This next clip is AMAZING. Check out what happens when the boss sees the poster…

CLIP#3 (4.6MB)

How’d you like all that cartoony action? Elbow madness.

To see this cartoon in its entirety, as well as more of these wonderful Jerry on the Job cartoons, look no further than Tom’s Vintage Cartoon Shop. This particular cartoon can be found on “Bray Rarities Volume 2″.

Thanks Thad – when I first watched this film I knew I would be making a post about it. It’s just too good not to share.

Thanks Andrea – Tom’s got tons of great shorts on his site. I’m going to try and post more of my favorite sequences in future posts.

I remember hearing that Walter Lantz was allegedly one of the animators who worked on “Buried Treasure” (starring ‘Everready Harton’). Or was that just an unfounded rumor ?

Hi Dave – yeah I read that somewhere too. We’ll probably never know for sure, but some of the sequences do look very Lantz-esque.
